The practice is led by managing director Stephen Hill along with associate Ian Flack. Prior to setting up the practice Stephen and Ian have worked together for many years on a number of complex and successful projects.
Our focus is on designing buildings that fully satisfy our clients’ requirements, are well made and built to last. We provide environments that enhance the lives of all of those who use them.
Stephen Hill - Director

Stephen is an award winning architect with a wealth of experience. He has led the design and delivery of a wide range of different types of building set up Stephen Hill Architects in 2012.
Before setting up his own practice Stephen was an Architect Director for major international practice BDP. Whilst there he led the design of many of major projects including; schools, universities, court buildings, offices, fire stations and an ice centre.
Stephen has particular expertise in the design of educational buildings. He led the RIBA award winning £100m expansion of the University of York campus. Stephen Hill Architects continues to work with the University. Stephen also led the design of a number of schools and, over the last five years, he has been a Design Advisor for the Department of Education on over 30 schools.
After qualifying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, Stephen worked with leading London based practice, Michael Squire Associates. He was project architect for major residential developments and also worked on a several high quality commercial office projects. Following this he moved to Lisbon to work with a leading Portuguese practice, Sua Kay Arquitectos, where he led the design of a number of high specification office buildings.
As a highly qualified and experienced practitioner Stephen is a RIBA Client Advisor. He has also been an external examiner for Leeds Beckett University. Stephen was chair of the judging panel for the Yorkshire Region 2019 RIBA Awards.
Ian Flack - Associate
BA(Hons) DipArch RIBA
Ian is an experienced, practicing chartered architect and has worked with Stephen Hill Architects on a number of projects. He has particular expertise of building design in the education, public safety, transport and domestic sectors. He has worked for large and small architects’ practices, and been involved in the design of a wide variety of building types ranging from relatively small works on listed buildings to large award winning schemes on challenging sites. Recently Ian has undertaken a number of high quality domestic projects in the Peak District National Park and High Peak.
Ian has a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and modern construction methods. He is listed on the RIBA’s conservation register, is a Civic Trust Awards assessor, and an examiner for the final “Part 3” RIBA professional examinations. He is used to working closely with clients, contractors, consultants and local authority bodies, and making presentations to large and small groups.
Ian studied architecture at the University of Sheffield, graduating in 2000, after which he joined BDP. Ian was made an associate, acted as design team leader on a number of complex multi-disciplinary projects and was a Quality Assurance (QA) auditor.
In 2012 Ian worked within a practice specialising on high end residential commissions and works to traditional and listed buildings before setting up his own practice, Ian Flack Architects. Ian joined at Stephen Hill Architects as an associate in June 2018.
