Stephen Hill Architects were commissioned to design a new private house on site abutting the greenbelt in Wickersley, near Rotherham. Both the family house and conjoined flat are fully wheelchair accessible. The clients wanted a building sympathetic to its natural surroundings and with a clean contemporary design and open plan spaces.
Embedded into its sloping site the building has a barn-like form appropriate to its agricultural setting. It is designed to be very energy efficient with a highly insulated envelope and utilises low energy technologies. The main habitable spaces are placed on the south side of the building with large windows overlooking the panoramic views across the valley. More highly serviced rooms occupy the north side of the building facing the owner’s livery yard.
